Katherine Miller-Darras, LCSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Child, Adolescent, & Adult Therapist;
It can be hard to communicate and manage a variety of issues with your child or teenager. He or she may be inattentive and have trouble managing impulses. Your younger child or adolescent may spend a lot of time on screens or have challenges in school, socially or academically. I can be of help improving these matters by supporting the building of meaningful relationships, addressing underlying emotions, and strengthening communication and coping skills. I can also help with supporting you as parents, managing and navigating these challenges.
I believe therapy works best when it is conducted as a partnership between the patient and therapist. Collaboration is key to helping patients meet their goals and make progress in therapy. I truly enjoy seeing patients make progress reducing their symptoms and improving their quality of life.
Background
Following obtaining my MSW from Columbia University in 2001, I practiced clinical social work and therapy in a variety of settings, including schools, family support centers for struggling families, a hospital, and a treatment program for adults with serious mental illness. These experiences provided me with exposure to an array of presenting problems and clinical challenges and allowed me to further build up a variety of therapeutic skills and effective treatments to support patients. Having practiced for 20+ years, I am well versed in the provision of therapy.
Since returning to the Virginia area, where I am originally from, I have been working as a Therapist at Inova Kellar Center. I currently provide individual and family therapy to children, adolescents, and families coping with a range of issues including Depression, Anxiety disorders, ADHD, Autism, mood disorders, and other life challenges and conditions.
Approach
I use various modalities, including but not limited to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), play therapy, solution focused therapy, and insight oriented psychotherapy, in order to support patients in reaching their goals. I provide therapy in a direct and supportive style, with value placed on building a positive therapeutic relationship with each client.
Personal
While not practicing therapy, I enjoy spending time in a book club, being in nature, traveling, and spending time with my friends and family, which includes 2 sons and a Siamese cat.
